Meet the team – Vehicle Test Technician Trevor Jones

We caught up with one of LRWEA’s newest team members, Trevor Jones, to talk about his background in motorsport and a rather unusual hobby.

What’s your career history?

My career background is mainly in motorsport. I started out in 1995 at an independent Porsche dealership. While working there, my boss got a touring car and offered me the opportunity to become its lead mechanic. I jumped at the chance and for two years, I worked on Porsches during the day and touring cars at night.

From there, I went on to work in a series of motorsport roles, including positions with Alpha Motorsports and a rally team.

I then moved into contracting, which included working for Aston Martin building the Vanquish through to being a seek and repair technician. Following the recession, I joined Aerotech Laboratories as a fuel tank technician, before moving to Integral Powertrain. I spent nine years as a rotor winding technician there before joining the LRW team in April this year.

What’s a typical day like at LRW?

It’s busy, varied and there’s never a dull day. One of the key parts of my role is driving vehicles on the rolling road as part of our test process, where consistency is absolutely essential.

Would you class yourself as a petrol head?

Definitely. I’m a big Formula 1 fan and I also enjoy touring car racing. I’ve been fortunate to drive a lot of amazing cars throughout my career. One highlight was when I worked for Aston Martin and got to take a DBS home for the weekend.

And what do you drive?

A Skoda Octavia vRS TDi.

Any interesting hobbies?

I keep big spiders. I bought my first spider with my first ever pay packet 40 years ago and it’s been a hobby ever since. I now keep around 40 spiders, ranging from dwarf species to some seriously huge ones - as well as a few scorpions.
